Watch Description

I picked up this interesting watch this week.  Think it might be a Captain but not 100% sure.  The dial is different but I like it.  It reads B-10K gold filled on the back.  The band may not be original but goes well with the watch.  Nice inscription on the back reads From Mother and Dad To Son.  Thanks.

Nice one Kathy, don't believe I've ever seem one before.  Ad appears to be a match. If confirmed, it's another first for the Db.

Based on the ad, the band appears to be different, but a nice aesthetic match to the watch. I like it.

1939 Bulova Captain works for me

Thanks Bob.  The band looks like it is the right era but not an original match.  It is a bit worn but still in usable condition : )

Another possibility is the Admiral, 1940 ad. They look identical, and neither shows a dial similar to yours. I like the green tint of this dial. Either works for me, so Captain from 1939.

Thanks Ken, it is a unique color to the dial, I quite like it too.

We have 2 ads in the Db from Nov. 1939 referring to this as "Captain". Ads then start calling it "Admiral" in 1940.

I think we are seeing a "promotion in rank". There are 3 Admirals in the Db, all dated 1940 and no Captains.

If watch was dated 1940, I would vote Admiral .  With the 1939 date corresponding ads I would definitely call it

1939 Bulova Captain.

I would agree with that.  Must have been a name change in 1940.

A thought - Why not NAME your son?

It's possible it was such an expensive and special gift (in 1939)  that it was engraved generic so it could pass from father to son over generations as a family heirloom. Hand it to your "son" and say: "When your first born son gets married, you and your wife pass  it on to him and explain it's significance". Just a random thought...
